The Skubal Market: Who Can Actually Land Him?
After separating reported interest from teams with the pieces and motivation to complete a trade, I see one clear favorite and one especially interesting long shot.
Real contender: Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers are the most realistic landing spot—not necessarily because they need Skubal most, but because they can satisfy Detroit’s unusually complicated demands.
Detroit reportedly does not want a package consisting only of distant prospects. The Tigers are looking for an MLB-ready young starting pitcher plus additional premium talent, allowing them to remain competitive beyond 2026. Rival evaluators have identified Los Angeles as the cleanest trade match because the Dodgers possess nine Top-100 prospects and young, controllable major-league starters such as Justin Wrobleski and Emmet Sheehan.
The Dodgers also have legitimate rotation uncertainty surrounding Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow. They do not desperately need Skubal to reach October but acquiring him would strengthen their own rotation while preventing Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta or Philadelphia from putting him at the front of theirs.
That last part matters. Los Angeles could make the trade partly as a defensive maneuver.
Why it works:
- They have the deepest combination of MLB-ready pitching and elite prospects.
- They can absorb the loss of several valuable young players.
- They are pursuing a third consecutive World Series championship.
- Skubal gives them a true Game 1 postseason starter.
- Their front office can justify paying heavily for a rental because the championship window is right now.
What could stop it: The Dodgers reportedly are not eager to surrender a massive prospect package for two months of Skubal. Detroit may also demand Wrobleski or another young starter whom Los Angeles considers essential beyond this season.
My estimated chance: Dodgers 25%
That sounds modest, but in a seven-team race—plus the possibility Detroit keeps him—it makes Los Angeles my favorite.
Most viable long shot: Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays are the fascinating team nobody should dismiss.
Tampa Bay has been directly connected to Skubal and possesses the prospect depth to make Detroit listen. The Rays have also been aggressive in searching for a starting pitcher and reportedly have premium young talent available throughout one of baseball’s stronger farm systems.
More importantly, this is not a fake contender trying to create headlines. The American League lacks a dominant favorite, and Tampa Bay has a legitimate path to the World Series. Adding Skubal to a rotation featuring Drew Rasmussen, Shane McClanahan and Nick Martinez could make the Rays the most dangerous October pitching team in the league. McClanahan’s recent back issue only increases the potential urgency.
The problem is philosophical.
The Rays normally accumulate young, inexpensive, controllable talent. Skubal is scheduled to become a free agent after this season. Surrendering several premium prospects for a rental would be extremely aggressive by Tampa Bay’s standards.
But that is precisely why they qualify as the best viable long shot. They have the assets. They have the need. They have a real championship opportunity. The only question is whether ownership and baseball operations are willing to behave differently than they normally do.
My estimated chance: Rays 12%
Tampa Bay is not the favorite, but I would place them above several bigger-market clubs because they can construct a package Detroit might actually value.
The strongest alternative: Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee may need Skubal more than anyone.
The Brewers have reached the postseason in eight of the past nine seasons but have not reached the World Series since 1982. After finishing with baseball’s best record in 2025, they were swept by Los Angeles in the NLCS. Pairing Skubal with Jacob Misiorowski would give Milwaukee a postseason rotation capable of changing that outcome.
However, Milwaukee faces the same fundamental problem as Tampa Bay: a small-market organization would be surrendering years of inexpensive control for approximately two months of Skubal. The Brewers may be more comfortable pursuing a less expensive starter or a player controlled beyond 2026.
My estimated chance: Brewers 15%
I rank Milwaukee slightly ahead of Tampa Bay in raw likelihood, but the Rays are the more interesting true long-shot call.

The Cubs have a major rotation need and enough prospect capital, but Detroit’s demand for an immediate rotation replacement complicates the match. Atlanta could form a devastating Skubal–Chris Sale combination, although its system may struggle to outbid Los Angeles. Philadelphia has Andrew Painter, exactly the type of young pitcher Detroit covets, but giving him up for a rental would be an enormous decision. The Yankees have the resources and urgency, but their rotation is not currently their biggest weakness, particularly with Aaron Judge’s health uncertain.

Most likely trade destination: Los Angeles Dodgers
Best viable long shot: Tampa Bay Rays
Most likely overall outcome: It is extremely close between a Dodgers trade and Detroit holding him because the Tigers’ asking price will be massive.
Detroit has now given the clearest indication yet that it intends to sell by scratching Casey Mize from a scheduled start despite him being healthy. Skubal’s market includes the Dodgers, Yankees, Brewers, Rays, Braves, Cubs and Phillies. The deadline is Monday, August 3, 2026, at 6 p.m. ET, leaving very little time for one club to meet Detroit’s price.
